After completing my PhD in 1992 at Loughborough University on British travellers in the Middle East I have lectured from Somerset to Cumbria on the history of travel writing for Universities and Adult Education Centres.
I am passionate about my subject and aim to inspire students to develop their own interests. My lectures are informal , offering scope for students to ask questions and discuss their own ideas and reading. Usually, no prior knowledge of the subject is necessary, although I do provide pre-course reading suggestions and a more extensive post-course bibliography .
Whether the course is on the Hudson’s Bay Company, Victorian Women travellers or Polar Explorers I aim to discuss historical and cultural context, individual biographies and the exciting highs and lows of the journeys.
I am particularly interested in how British travellers in the period 1700-1950s wrote about their experiences and how that was influenced by their personal background and the cultural milieu in which they lived.
