In 1992 , having worked 17 years as a secondary school teacher in Derbyshire and  having completed a PhD, part-time at Loughborough University, I gave up the day job to work as a supply teacher and lecturer in the winter and to live in France during the summer and  travel as widely as possible.

I have lectured part-time on the history of travel writing for over 20 years for organisations such as Nottingham and Keele Universities, WEA, Wedgwood College, Higham Hall, Knuston Hall, Missenden Abbey, Burton Manor College, Farncombe and Dillington.

The travels with my wife have seen us trekking in the Himalayas and Canada, teaching English in Romania and visiting France,Croatia,Hungary,Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and, not forgetting, Britain in our campervan. Wherever we go we love to talk to people, learn about the local culture and history, walk in the mountains, canoe and climb.Having the good fortune to live in the Peak District during the winter, we can indulge our love for the outdoors throughout the year.
