Eskimo_Family_NGM-v31-p564

The haunting sound of camel bells passing in the night, mysterious hunters glimpsed in dark forests, and the creak of horse drawn caravans all evoke the romance of the open road. But the peoples who inhabit it have also been described as “thievish Knavish rascals”.
Come and discover the myths and reality of nomadic existence. During the course we will investigate various types of nomads including -the hunter gathering North American Indians and Inuit; pastoralists in the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa ; and the lives of European gypsies.
The course will provide an opportunity to debate Chatwin’s contention that nomadism is the natural state of humanity; look at how successfully nomadic peoples adapt to a changing world and stereotypes of nomadic peoples.
