The Plant Hunters

Something as seemingly gentle as plant collection has an astounding and heroic history – the collectors risked and lost their lives in far flung corners of the globe to satisfy the hunger for new medicines, trees, fruits and flowers in Europe. The course will be an opportunity to learn about those who sent them out, the social and cultural background which produced them, the gardens to which they contributed and the adventures they encountered.

In these lectures we will focus on the Tradescants, Sir Joseph Banks, David Douglas, Kingdon Ward and George Forrest.Their journeys took them from Russia to Australia, America to China.George_Forrest_1
