Traders, Trappers and Tribes

The fascinating and exciting history of the Hudson’s Bay Company employees’ exploration of Canada is little known in Britain. This course is intended to rectify that omission.

The intention of the lectures is to illuminate the story through the lives of key figures such as Samuel Hearne, David Thompson, Dr John Rae and the  little known figure of Peter Fidler.
The weekend of lectures will allow time for students to encounter the stories of the explorers through a study of their journals and maps. The lectures will look at the stories of first meetings with Native Americans, the intermarriages and the dramatic history of inter-company rivalry which almost amounted to a civil war at the end of the eighteenth-century.
