The course seeks to investigate the works of Peter Fidler, explorer, who was one of the first Europeans to meet some of Canada’s Indian tribes; Florence Nightingale, particularly her life altering, but little known, journey to the Nile; Lord Curzon, the journeys which prepared him for his role as Viceroy of Egypt ; and finally Edward Carpenter, socialist, sandal maker, market gardener, poet , whose works and personality was an almost forgotten influence on people like D.H. Lawrence and E.M.Forster.
